Our girls | Wise words indeed

Your Excellency HQ is a beautiful, purpose built office at the bottom of our garden in the Bedfordshire countryside.

The only commuter traffic you are likely to encounter across the lawn, are our girls – five hybrid chickens.

Our girls are lovingly and aptly named according to breed/colour/my daughter’s whim – Bluebell, Lilly, Ruby, Henny Penny and Betty. Whilst our girls all have their own characters and their own unique quirks, the one thing that they all have in common is their ability to lay eggs. We have a constant supply of beautiful, large (admittedly, sometimes a bit misshapen) eggs.

There’s something very satisfying about collecting our girls’ eggs still warm in the coup and proudly serving them as creamy scrambled egg alongside bacon during Saturday brunch or baking the family recipe for sticky black gingerbread on a cold Sunday baking afternoon with my daughter.

And the one thing I really love about our girls? It’s their absolute “song and dance” when they’ve laid an egg. Even though it’s something they do every day, they still announce their pride in what they have done. They come helter-skelter down the coup ladder, jump up onto the dust bath and sing loudly. Remembering the little ditty I sang with my children when they were young “chick, chick, chick, chick, chicken lay a little egg for me” is surely written by someone who recognises this.

“Chick, chick, chick, chick chicken” is their song. Every single time they lay an egg.

And that makes me smile.

I love that Our Girls are proud of something they regularly do. That they are vocal about sharing it.

And that makes me think.

How often do we stop and take stock of what we have achieved or done (particularly if it’s something we regularly do that we may take for granted)? How often do we sing our own little song of pride and share it with others?

If you want to sing your own little song of pride, nominate yourself for WeAreTheCity’s Rising Star Awards.

Now in their third year, the WATC Rising Star Awards are the first to focus on the UK’s female talent pipeline below management level. Through these awards we will celebrate 100 individual female contributors that represent the leaders and role models of ‪tomorrow.
